88. What is CPU and how does it work?
Answer
The CPU means Central Processing Unit which is also called microprocessor or processor is in
charge of processing data. How it will process data will depend on the program. The program
can be a spreadsheet, a word processor or a game. It just follows the instructions. When you
double click on an icon to run a program, here is what happens:
1. The program, which is stored inside the hard disk drive, is transferred to the RAM
memory. A program is a series of instructions to the CPU.
2. The CPU, using a circuit called memory controller, loads the program data from the
RAM memory.
3. The data, now inside the CPU, is processed.
Then what happens will depend on the program.
89. Describe RAM and ROM
Answer "RAM" stands for "random access memory." RAM is memory that stores data in a random order,
and it can be written to again and again. However, RAM is functional only when electrical
current runs through it, so when your computer is powered down, it can't hold anything in the
RAM. That's why your computer needs different types of memory; with only RAM, you'd never
be able to store any data.
"ROM" stands for "read-only memory." With ROM, you can only access the data stored on it.
You can't write new data to ROM, except in a few select situations. You might run into a CD
ROM that's got a computer program installed on it, or other types of ROM that contain data but
to which you can't write data. Because ROM cannot be re-written, it's generally used for longterm
storage.
90. What is computer threat and how do you secure your computer properly?
Sample Answer If you connect to the Internet, allow other people to use your computer, or share files with others,
you should take steps to protect your computer from harm. Why? Because there are computer
criminals (sometimes called hackers or crackers) who attack other people's computers. These
people can attack directly, by breaking into your computer through the Internet and stealing your
personal information, or indirectly, by creating malicious software (or malware) designed to
harm your computer.
Fortunately, you can protect yourself by taking a few simple precautions. This article describes
the threats and what you can do to defend against them.
Check your security status with Windows Security Center. Windows Security Center is your
headquarters for computer security. It shows your computer's current security status and
recommends anything that you should do to help make your computer more secure. To open it:
Open Security Center by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel,
clicking Security, and then clicking Security Center.
Top three things you can do to protect your computer
Use security software
Practice the principle of least privilege (PoLP)
Maintain current software and updates
Avoid threats to your computer
Never share passwords or pass phrases
Do not click random links
Beware of unknown email and attachments
Don't download unknown software off the Internet
Don't propagate hoaxes or chain mail
Log out/lock your computer
Shut down lab/test computers
Remove unnecessary programs
Restrict remote access
Frequently back up important files
Treat sensitive data carefully
Remove data securely
Deploy encryption when possible
Securing your home network
